Michael Ferris conceptualized the idea for doorstep trash collection in 1995 while living at an apartment community in Tampa, FL. On the way to his community compactor, egg leaked out of a trash bag he had carefully balanced on the hood of his car. He thought of all the amenities his community provided to him and wondered why doorstep trash collection was not one of them. His revolutionary idea would solve a simple, but historic, problem in apartment living – taking out the trash.
The multifamily housing industry was missing a functional way to manage the removal of trash and recyclables, which also added value to both residents and management. Michael constructed a business plan and began building the foundation for a company that would focus on People, Process and Communication - Valet Waste was born.
Michael personally collected trash for many years and worked diligently with on-site staff and residents to develop the framework of a service model that is still at the core of all of our services being used today. From 2007 to 2015, New Mountain Capital was the majority owner in the company. Today, the Valet Waste team, backed by the private equity group of Ares Management and Harvest Partners with combined assets over $90 billion, continues to build and grow one of the most well respected brands in the United States.

President/Chief Executive Officer
As President and CEO, Shawn Handrahan leads the Sales, Operations and Marketing functions of Valet Waste. Shawn began his career with Valet Waste in February of 2012 after more than a decade serving the multifamily industry with HD Supply Facilities Maintenance in various leadership roles, most recently as Vice President – Multifamily. Shawn attended Delta State University and the University of Virginia Executive Education program at the Darden School of Business. He is active in state and national apartment associations and has led training seminars for N.A.A. as well as contributed Articles for N.A.A.’s UNITS magazine.
Chief Financial Officer
Brett Brown is the Chief Financial Officer of Valet Waste and manages the Finance and Information Technology Departments. Prior to joining Valet Waste, Brett was Vice President, Finance and CFO for HD Supply Facilities Maintenance, an international supplier of maintenance, repair and operations products. During his eighteen-year tenure with HD Supply Facilities Maintenance, Brett provided financial leadership, guidance and strategic direction for the company during a period of sustained, aggressive growth. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Southern California, and has held a CPA Certification with the California Board of Accountancy since 1988.
Chief Operating Officer
Mike is the Chief Operating Officer at Valet Waste and has broad experience in operations improvement and turn-around work across multiple industries. Before joining Valet Waste, he served as a consultant for senior leaders of companies owned by private equity, leading continuous improvement efforts in manufacturing, distribution, financial services, and food service. Prior to that, Mike was the Senior Vice President of Manufacturing for the Eastern Division of Simmons Bedding, drastically improving customer satisfaction and increasing profitability while supporting the introduction of new channels and the largest product redesign in the company’s history. Mike graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; he is a Certified Lean Six Sigma Sensei from Villanova University.
Chief Marketing Officer
Patti Girardi is Chief Marketing Officer of Valet Waste, leading the development and implementation of all marketing strategies and initiatives. Prior to joining the company, Patti was Vice President of Marketing for Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services, the college foodservice division of Compass Group. Patti previously served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Western division of Fox Cable Networks. She began her marketing career with Cox Communications, where she held a number of field and corporate marketing positions, including Vice President, Marketing and Director, Web Marketing & E-Commerce. Patti holds a BA in Economics from Trinity College (Hartford, CT) and an MBA from Harvard University.
Chief People Officer
Henry is Valet Waste's Chief People Officer and is responsible for providing leadership in the development and execution of Valet Waste's people strategies, including succession planning, learning and development, performance management, organizational development, total rewards and culture. Henry has over 24 years of experience in human resources and talent management, most recently as Talent, Performance and Learning Leader at Citigroup, Inc. where he led a global organization tasked with converting four HR operations (North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific) and creating one global HR organization with a consistent global operating model in only 18 months. Henry speaks fluent Spanish and earned his Bachelor's degree in HR Management from Georgia State University. He also holds a Master's degree in Management from Temple University and recently completed an intensive HR Management program at Duke University.
Senior Vice President of Sales
As Senior Vice President of Sales, Syd McDonald leads four levels of Valet Waste’s sales organization: National Accounts, Regional Accounts, Market Level Accounts, and Customer Service. Syd began his career with Valet Waste in 2003 and since that time he has held various positions in sales and leadership. He holds a BS degree from Ball State University. Syd is active in many local and state level apartment associations as well as NMHC and NAA. Syd holds a Lyceum designation from the National Apartment Association.
Senior Vice President of Operations
Kelly is Valet Waste’s Senior Vice President of Operations. Kelly joined the team in September 2014. Prior to joining Valet Waste, Kelly worked in various senior level capacities with The Brickman Group, American Residential Services, ServiceMaster and General Electric covering sales, operations and marketing. Kelly excels at streamlining business functions, driving growth and improving functional efficiencies. Kelly earned BA degrees at National-Louis University in Business Administration and Management and Lindenwood University in Business.
Executive Vice President of Strategic Development
Steve Davis joined Valet Waste in March and is the Executive Vice President of Strategic Development. Mr. Davis’ primary focus is the continued build out, development, go-to-market strategies and operational execution strategies of Maintenance Plus. He has been in the service industry for over 30 years, with 10 years in the multi-family arena. Since the early 2000’s, Steve has been involved in hospitality oriented service organizations, serving as CEO, President and Vice President of various top revenue yielding companies such as Safemark Systems and HD Supply-Facilities Maintenance. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Vice President of Information Technology
As Vice President of Information Technology, Marc leverages his 15 years of experience and expertise in technology and business solutions to effectively align and manage Valet Waste’s technology investments with continuously evolving business goals during a tremendous explosion of growth at Valet Waste. Marc’s areas of responsibilities include the design, deployment, and support of Valet Waste’s custom mobile and web applications, and building, improving and managing Valet Waste’s IT infrastructure. Prior to joining Valet Waste, Marc was the Senior Director of IT and Operations at Veri-Tax, LLC based in Irvine, CA.
Vice President of Sustainability
As the Vice President of Sustainability, Heath Hallada leads the company’s environmental sustainability initiatives. Prior to joining Valet Waste in April 2016, Heath was the President and CEO of Green Door Valet in Texas. Heath chose Valet Waste as the company best suited to continue the pursuit of his vision of bringing sustainability, recycling and composting to every community nationwide. As a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Heath holds a BBA Supply Chain Operations Management degree, and currently lives in Austin, Texas.
